Germany 2008

Home Sweet Home for the week!
The boys exploring the grounds!
So cool, a sunken pirate ship! Good thing the temperature was in the 70's!
Johnny and Erik- Two peas in a pod!
Ice Cream for us, and German beer for Dad...Life is Good!

Johnny on the kiddie slide at the water park!

Curtis LOVED this "dangerous" slide!

Isn't he WILD! (:

Erik and I in the park!

The boys relaxing at the sub-tropical water park at our resort!
Curtis and Johnny outside the cabin. I learned again how different having boys is, than my house was growing up. All they needed was a stick, an ant hill, and a bottle of water, and they were entertained for hours!
Outside of the castle in Celle, Germany. Johnny thought they might think he was the "King of the Castle" if he wore his crown! Curtis was afraid the fire-breathing dragons might eat him!
The boys watching a water fountain in Celle. Minutes before Johnny ventured into it, and was soaking wet and screaming!
We had a great time in Germany this past week. The country was much bigger than the Netherlands, and more Americanized- with imports! (They had REAL gum: Extra, Orbit, Juicy Fruit, ect!) We left on Friday and the trip took seven hours because of road construction in Germany. First thing we noticed is no one spoke a lick of English. This is quite different for us, from the Netherlands. Here, most everyone knows English, as they start learning it in second grade.
We got to our resort and were pleasantly surprised at how nice it was. I unpacked, and the boys played at the two parks, about 1/2 block from our cabin. We all went to bed...until 3am. The heater in the cabin wasn't working. It was pretty chilly. First, I have to explain that the cabin wasn't huge...but perfect for us. It was the size of a large hotel room. With two bedrooms, a living room/kitchen area, and a bathroom. Erik and Johnny were in one bedroom, and Curtis and I in the other. (The biggest bed was a double, and there was NO way I was squeezing in there with Erik...it was tight enough with Curtis!) Anyways, Erik walks out of his room at 3am, with his arms crossed and visibly angry. I walk out, and he looks at me, like he is mad, and says- "We're FREEZING on our side of the cabin!" As if my ROOM is SO much warmer 7 feet away from his! We try to get the heater to work, and are arguing. I tell him it's gas, and he says it's electric. I can hear the pilot light trying to work. (In my head, I just wish my DAD was here to help!) Finally, Erik says, "I'm going to turn on the stove to get some heat in here!" Now, I'm freaking out- "HAVEN'T YOU EVER HEAR OF CARBON MONOXIDE? DON'T YOU WATCH THE NEWS IN THE WINTER WITH THEM TELLING YOU NOT TO TURN ON THE BURNERS FOR HEAT?" Erik's response is, we have to do something! Finally, we get the heater to light and it starts to warm the cabin. Erik goes back to bed happily- like he is THAT much warmer in a matter of seconds. I on the other hand, can't sleep a wink. Why- because it's then that I notice everything is gas- stove, heater, and there is NO carbon monoxide detector in the cabin! For the rest of the night, I'm pretty sure I have a headache and flu-like symptoms. (Or maybe that is just being prego!) I finally open my window and fall asleep close to morning!
Our first full day was great! The weather was really nice during the day- 70's four out of our five days in Germany. We all headed to the water park and spent the morning there. The boys LOVED it, and it was empty the whole time. Was perfect for their ages! After long naps, we hit up the lake and exploring the grounds.
The second day we spent at the beach, eating lunch over-looking the beach, and just relaxing! So nice to have time to do nothing and read, while the boys played. I remember not too long ago, watching other mom's at the park who were sitting on a bench with a coffee and a book. I wondered if I would EVER be able to do that? Well, my time has come...at least for the next 5 1/2 months! (I'm going to enjoy it while I can!)
The third day, it was back to the water park. We had a great time again- until Johnny told us his tummy hurt, and he got a stomach bug while he was eating at the restaurant. I won't go into details- but after Erik took care of the mess (I'm still sick- so I would have been worse than Johnny had I cleaned him up!), I headed back with a very mad Johnny to the cabin for a nap and to rest.
The fourth day, it rained all day, a steady rain. Was a perfect day to go out and explore Germany. We went to a few towns, and hit up some Walmart type stores. Our favorite town was Celle. It was the typical German town- with a nice castle in it. Inside the castle was a wishing well. The boys all go up to the well to make a wish.
Here are their wishes-
Johnny: "I wish, I wish, I wish for a Baby Einstein Video with giraffe's in it!"
Curtis: "I wish that everyone here didn't speak German!" (Can you tell he just wanted a friend at the parks to play with!)
As we were walking back to the car, down the cute streets filled with shops, Curtis stopped DEAD in his tracks and said, "Cool store, let's go in!" I look and it's a GERMAN dollar store! The four of us were in heaven! Curtis and Johnny walked out with Koosh Balls, and a hacky sack, and Erik walked out with a travel chess set! That's all the loot we bought while in Germany! We were totally laughing on the way out- that THANK goodness we all love stuff like that! Now, if only my dad were there, it would have been the perfect combination in the "Euro Store!"
Finally, it was back to pack up our stuff, as we had to check out the following day. Our last day, after we packed the car, and cleaned the cabin, Erik went to the park with the boys, one last time, while I went into town to return plastic bottles, our parking pass, ect. When I got back to the campgrounds, the scariest thing happened. I crossed the street and was on the sidewalk for about 15 feet and all of a sudden I heard this terrible noise. I look over in the street and a car hit a motorcyclist. It was BAD, and the guy on the motorcycle went FLYING about 10 feet into the ditch, and the car was totaled. I ran over, to find this guy lying in the ditch and not moving. The lady got out of her car, and didn't even seem like she wanted to help this guy. She was in shock and just stood there. A few workmen nearby, ran over to help, and had their phones out calling their 911-=112. It was when I got to the guy, and he was not responding much, than I realized that I was basically worthless. He was breathing- that was the first thing I checked for. But, NO ONE spoke English. So, once these workmen came, they took over, and I stood back and watched and waited to see if he continued to stay conscious. I didn't know if anyone knew first aide or CPR (I do) and just hung about, feeling really stupid, because NO ONE could understand anything I said, and visa versa! It was a very helpless feeling. These guys closed the road, and sat with him. They seemed to know what they were doing, and had someone get a blanket from their car to cover him up. After 24 minutes...yes, I timed it, the rescue team arrived. The guy never got up, just moaned. I was shocked they didn't put him on a spinal board and just lifted him on the stretcher. He couldn't move his legs, but could move his arms and upper body. I'm not sure if he broke him legs, or what, but he was pretty bad! It really made an impact on me, and I was jumpy in the car the whole way home. (aka- BACK SEAT DRIVER!)
So, now we are back, and Erik still has 4 days off of work because of holidays. I need to catch up on laundry, and then we'll head out somewhere in the Netherlands to visit.

It's Offical!

I'm an aunt again! Yesterday, Ann Marie and Nick made it through the Ethiopia court and became legal guardians of my newest nephew! Now it's just a few weeks until they get the birth certificate and travel dates to go pick up the newest member of our family and bring him home! I'm SO excited for them! Thanks to everyone who has contacted me regarding donations to send with Ann Marie over to Africa. It's really touched her!

On another note, it's been BEAUTIFUL for way too long in Holland. Everyday, I say, "Oh, it's SO nice, let's go sit on the beach! You never know what tomorrow will be like!" So, EVERYDAY this week, I've had my butt planted on the beach, and the kids have been playing, and half swimming! Tomorrow is Thursday and we leave for Germany on Friday morning. I have a crib FULL of laundry to fold (QUIT WINCING MOM!) and bags to pack. So, tomorrow, no matter how nice it is, I have to restrain myself from the short trek to the beach, and buckle down and pack! I'll post next week again once we get home! Have a great weekend everyone and HAPPY QUEEN'S DAY on April 30th!

Dutch School

Not too far from our house is a Dutch School. Everyday when we drive by the kids yell, "HI DUTCH SCHOOL!" They love to go there after school and ride their bikes around the yard. It's like my "culd-a-sac" away from home...except that there is no one to talk to in English! Anyways, the other day, Curtis turned towards my Dutch neighbor in the elevator and asked her, "When I turn Dutch, can I go to the Dutch school too?" Needless to say, the neighbor thought that was SO funny!
Next, I have to comment on my last blog. I've had a few people wonder if I would make my friend Lynne feel bad by posting that I was dreading the weekend with her kids. I wrote that, because I've been SO sick, that I've been nervous and worried about how the weekend would go. My friend Lynne knows this, because she has been the one here for me during this sick time. She's been to the store for me numerous times, made many bowls of chicken soup and meals for my family, and watched my kids countless times! She is like a sister to me over here. You don't find friends like her very often in your lifetime. I love being with her kids, and they get along great with my kids. As Lynne put it, this weekend was like having two sets of twins- two and four years old. Friday was the hardest because I was on my own. On Saturday and Sunday, Erik was around and ran the kids ragged! We had a great time with the kids, and would do it again in a heartbeat! I just had to clarify by last blog- I was just writing about what it was like having four kids under five years old. I don't' know how my mother did it and stayed so calm!
On another note, we are leaving to go on vacation in Germany on Friday morning. We are staying at a campground type place....with a "sub-tropical" indoor water park! All my British friends see Europe this way...It's GREAT for families and cheaper. So, we booked with the same company they all do out of the UK. You can either get a tent, or a trailer. We got a "Deluxe Trailer" with a few bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchen, living room, deck, and grill! I was skeptical, but, it is REALLY nice. I've seen pictures from my friends vacations and on the web. The kids are SO excited to go and see some castles, Germany, and swim! I'm excited because Erik has off for nine days- because a lot of Dutch Holidays are next week! Now, I just need to go get groceries, staple items, and pack bedding, clothes, ect! It's like packing to go up-north to the cabin...which I think will be a nice way to visit Germany! Just makes for a busier week than usual!

Trade-Off

So, this is the weekend I've been dreading. Remember back when Erik and I went to London, and our friends took the kids from Friday-Sunday. Well, this is the weekend we are paying them back. They flew out early this morning to Barcelona, Spain for a nice, quiet, romantic weekend together! We, get the privilege of watching four kids- ages two and four for three days. Luckily, I am feeling better, and I'm down to only having to take one anti-nausea pill a day. Smells aren't as strong as they were a month ago- but still aren't great.

So, today, Erik gets the easy way out...by "WORKING" all day. Let me rephrase that...by "Going out of the house to work." I had all four kids on my own. By noon, my body was signaling that it was TIME for bed! The kids all had other ideas. By three in the afternoon, I was sick and tired of my own voice... "Curtis, get back here....Emma, you need to listen!" By five o'clock, if another kid asked me a question, I might just go off the handle! It's only half-past five, and if Callum keeps pooping in his diaper, we may not be on speaking terms by the end of the weekend! Should make for one interesting weekend...I'll post some pictures, after I get some rest!

Donations

As most of you know already, my sister Ann Marie and husband Nick are adopting a baby from Ethiopia. If all goes well, they should be able to go over and get him late May/June. When they go get him, they will bring suitcases full of items that the orphanage desperately needs for the children in it. If anyone is interested in donating anything on this list for them to bring to Africa with them, please let me know by e-mail, and I'll give you Ann Marie's number so you can contact her! My e-mail address is: kaleaver@yahoo.com

What the Heck?

This is a picture of one of the toilets in our house. For a long time, we didn't understand how it worked. It's an ELECTRIC TOILET! After you flush, it all goes into the box by the wall. We call this the "disposal." In the box, is a very sharp metal fan, that chops up everything, just like a garbage disposal. Then it all goes down the pipe, after it's chopped up! This toilet totally GROSSES me out! I mean, who ever heard of an electric toilet? I'm not sure if I need to unplug it before I clean it or not! To be honest... this is one thing I won't miss when I leave Europe next year!

This is a picture I've been meaning to take for a while. When I go to the grocery store, here are a few of the things that make me laugh! First, is that "Cool Ranch Doritos" are called "Cool American" in Holland! Whenever I go to Subway, I say, "I'll have the 'Cool American' Doritos, because I am a "COOL AMERICAN"! The workers don't think it's as funny as I do!

The Pizza Says "BIG AMERICANS PIZZA"...yet, it is only a pizza that feeds two people. It's SO small, that it makes me laugh whenever I cook one!

Finally, the "American Cocktail"...little HOT DOGS! Come one...it's not like Americans go to Happy Hour and ask for an "American Cocktail"!

Boys at a birthday party this weekend. It was Curtis's class and Johnny was invited! He thought he was SO cool!

Spring is in the Air!

The boys this weekend on their way out the door!
Curtis biking on the boulevard on his way to the giraffe!
Johnny and Curtis in the Giraffe on the beach! It's getting nicer out! Yeah!
The boys eating their fresh fish and chips on the sea for dinner tonight!

It's finally starting to feel like spring! I'm feeling a little better this week. I'm not as tired, and less nausea. Although, I can't kick the whole throwing-up thing. The worst part about getting sick here, is that I feel as if I might need to get a job to afford it! It's one thing to go out in public and get sick and run to the bathroom in the USA. But here, when I get sick, I have to run to the bathroom and PAY the attendant 50 cents so I can use the toilet to throw up! It's a double whammy! On Friday I had to go out to get some items that were well over-due in the house. By the time I got home, I had spent $1.50 on getting sick in the restrooms! Thank GOODNESS there wasn't a line of people waiting to pay...or else we would have been in trouble!
